Those of you who know me may well be aware that badminton is one of my sports. I was the president of the badminton club at University of Sunderland and played over 30 times for the uni (not saying much mind, think my Mum could have played for us) and I actually have a Level 1 coaching qualification in it. So I was wondering how best to go about this challenge; weightlifting and taekwondo were completely new skills and so just going to a session and learning the basics was a challenge whereas that just wouldn’t do for badminton.
But next week (21st-27th November) just happens to be the 2nd annual Badminton4Macmillan week, whereby loads of badminton clubs up and down the country encourage everyone to #raisearacket and raise money and awareness for Macmillan Cancer support.
So I thought that this would be an ideal opportunity for me, and hopefully at least some of you, to get back onto the court and wipe the cobwebs off my (vintage) badminton racket. I wont use this as my actual challenge for badminton because I can already play, I’ll come up with something a little more substantial for that further down the line.
If you are interested in getting back into a sport that we have all played at some stage and is very welcoming to returners or newcomers of any age then please visit this page to see the venues and clubs that are running a Macmillan session. Below are the locations of clubs that are already confirmed to be running these sessions in the north east.
In other news, I did an interview on BBC Tees radio a couple of weeks ago and from this the radio station received an email requesting my details. John Davidson has kindly invited me to join him and his team, Marton Furness Hockey Club, to go down tonight and train myself up to hopefully playing an actual match, albeit for their 5th team!
I am delighted to take up this kind offer and looking forward to buying my first ever gumshield, but not looking forward to it being in use, hope they’ll take it easy on me. Also not sure I’m entirely fit enough to be running around a big field chasing a ball with a stick but I will certainly be giving it my best shot!
Will of course keep you updated with my progress over the weeks and hopefully provide some footage of coaching I receive and any matches that I do get the chance to play in!
Finally, there are big plans afoot for my golf challenge which will involve the involvement of lots of people. Hopefully will be able to announce more about it soon, looking towards the summer of 2017 for that one but will give plenty of notice for anyone who wants to sharpen up their game before then!
